<itunes:subtitle>Grace NYC Sunday sermon audio.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Grace is a congregation in Manhattan. Our purpose is to let God’s Kingdom be seen in the individual lives of New York residents and throughout the heart of the city’s culture. We see that a lot of traditional church cultures are completely foreign to people who live in Manhattan. We’re not saying that we have a handle on this, but we want to connect the reality of God in Christ to living in New York City.

We take the reality of Scripture seriously. We believe that it can change all of us. We see Scripture as a supernatural force that defies all of the attempts to corner it. Our journey is to understand Scripture and live it in our communities.

We also take New York City seriously. There is a language, a rhythm, and a struggle that this city creates. We want to live in the city and allow the Kingdom of God to change us and the city around us. We want to make New York City a better place for everyone.

These are the latest sermons from our Sunday morning services.</itunes:summary>

This Easter Sunday we have a special treat in that Dr. Brian Miller will be joining us to talk about the Shroud of Turin. If you're unfamiliar with the Shroud, it's a disputed piece of cloth that is claimed to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. Dr. Miller will bring us evidence that is indeed true, and, why that is. Regardless, though, of what beliefs you walk out with, it will be a very interesting presentation that will at the very least capture our imaginations and inspire us towards Jesus.

Dr. Brian Miller serves as Senior Research Analyst and consultant for Resources Development and Implementation, a Nashville based consulting company specializing in strategic planning and implementation. Dr. Miller received his BS in physics form MIT and his Ph.D. in physics from Duke University. After finishing his PhD, he served as Academic dean for a Durham-based leadership institute. During that time, he developed training materials to assist leaders in understanding the impact of science, philosophy, and religious faith on different professions, such as business, law, and education. He also traveled internationally speaking and teaching on issues of science, faith, and culture. After moving to Nashville, Dr. Miller pioneered an initiative to train leaders to create positive change in the marketplace, and he consults on this topic with churches and other non-profit organizations.

Series: Waiting

When Jesus was born, the Jewish people had been waiting over 400 years for the promised Messiah. It wasn’t just a waiting period either. It had been 400 years sense God had spoken through his prophets. So, it was a waiting in silence. What was said 400 years earlier, though, that would keep them waiting with anticipation? What could be so significant so as not to give up complete hope? Join us this month as we explore what the prophets said that arrested the Jewish people with anticipation and kept them anxiously waiting.

Every Sunday morning people from around the Grace Community come together to help create an environment where people can connect with God. This happens as people show up to help out with our kids church, our worship team, setting up the tech systems, and setting up our main worship area. And, they don't stop there. They serve throughout the service and even afterwards. This is what it takes every Sunday for a service to happen. So, in addition to serving & helping the Grace Community, why else should you join a team to help out on Sunday mornings?

1. It will bless you. - The Bible says very simply that it's more blessed to give than to receive. By giving of your time on Sunday mornings you'll find very quickly that serving on a team on Sunday mornings will bless you tremendously.
2. You'll be a part of building something here in NYC. - One of the things we say often at Grace is that we want to make New York City a better place for everyone. That means serving the City and the people that live here. That can sound daunting, but, one simple way to do that is to join a Sunday morning team. Little by little we're serving this City and making it a better place for everyone.
3. You'll be serving people. - The main goal isn't that we'd come and set some stuff up on Sunday mornings. The main goal is that we'd provide an environment where people can connect with and have a genuine experience with God. This means that in everything we do, we're there to serve people. So, when people do have an experience with God, you can know that God used you to play a part in that.
4. You'll be growing closer to God. - The Bible says that Jesus came not to be served, but, to serve. There's something important we can learn as we come on Sunday not to be served, but, to serve. We learn a little bit more about Jesus, and, therefore grow closer to him by identifying with his mission.

If you'd like to join one of our teams on Sunday morning, you can email info@gracenyc.org or contact Daniel Gilland on The City
and let him know.

The City is Grace's new online network, communication tool, online giving system, and so much more.
Apple Picking

Join us on October 1st for Grace's annual Apple Picking trip. We'll head out around 10:30 or 11am (official time coming soon) and head up to Wilklow Orchards in Highland, NY where we'll enjoy picking apples, apple donuts (AMAZING), and watching people climb through trees in search of the perfect apple. Since they don't sell food (besides the Apple donuts which could possibly substituted for a normal lunch of you're ok being on a sugar high) we'll bring our own lunches and eat there. We'll then head back and be back in the city by around 6pm.

Cost for the trip is $25 which includes transportation to and from. To go apple picking you'll need to purchase an apple picking bag at $18. Just remember, though, you don't have to purchase a bag alone, you can share a bag with friends.

If you have any questions please email us at info@gracenyc.org

The Bible describes the person of God as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. For a lot of us we’ve heard about the Father and the Son, but very little about the Spirit. Over the coming weeks we’ll examine what the Scripture reveals about the God who intervenes in our day to day life as we explore the 3rd person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit.

*** UPDATE 2: AUGUST 26, 2011 ***

*** Sunday Service Cancelled ***

You may have seen or received an email from the MTA already informing you that public transit will be shutting down at noon tomorrow for the coming Hurricane. We also received communication from the Y that they will be closing at 2pm tomorrow. So, for obvious reasons, church IS cancelled this coming Sunday.

Please stay at home or in a safe place during the storm. As we said in an earlier communication today (which you can read below), if you are in a low lying area or just feel uncomfortable where you are, we have several locations available for you to go to during the storm.

As a reminder, the MTA will be shutting down at noon tomorrow, so, if you are going to stay somewhere other than your home, please make arrangements to do so before then. They are also speculating that subway service will not be up and running again until possibly Monday afternoon. There is also the possibility of subway tunnels flooding under the rivers, so, if you're in one of the boroughs please note that it could possibly be longer before you can take a train back into Manhattan.

If you have any other questions or concerns about this storm or your personal safety please contact us at info@gracenyc.org and we will respond as quickly as possible.

Again, please take any necessary precautions to stay safe during the storm.

*** UPDATE: AUGUST 26, 2011 ***

At Grace, we're not just your local church, we're also your resident meteorologists for all the latest with Hurricane Irene (okay, that might be taking it a bit far...).

We do want to communicate with everyone, though, concerning the storm that seems to be headed our direction. Again, with the variables that weather brings, we are NOT canceling the Grace Sunday Service at this time. We will make that decision closer to time and email everyone by Saturday night with the latest news.

We do, however, want to be prepared should this storm hit New York City as it has the potential to be a decent sized storm. The city is preparing itself as well for the storm and released a local hurricane map. This map shows the low lying areas in and around the city that are prone to flooding in storms like this. You can view or download this map here. You can also put your address in at this website to check and see if you are in a hurricane evacuation zone.

That brings us to one of the purposes of this message. If you are in a flood zone or, if you are just uncomfortable riding this storm out where you are, we are putting together places where people can gather and ride out the storm together. We have a few places already lined up should anyone need a place to go.

If you do need a place to go, please email Daniel Gilland at daniel@gracenyc.org. He will then provide you with some options of places that you can go during the storm. Also, if you would like to open up your place as one of the places that people can go, please email Daniel Gilland as well to let him know.

Again, at this time, we are NOT canceling the Sunday service. We are, however, taking precautions and doing what we can to be a prepared community should this storm affect us.

In addition to any future emails we'll be sending out, you can check back here for the latest news about our Sunday Service and any other information pertinent to our community.

Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns concerning this storm.

If you are not on Grace's email list you can sign up here. Once signed up you will get all hurricane related news as well as the Grace Updates that we regularly send out.

If you've been watching the news, then you already know that this coming Sunday morning we might be right in the path of Hurricane Irene. So, what does this mean for Grace's Sunday service? Well, besides potential buckets of rain and high winds, we're just not sure yet. Being that weather is unpredictable we're going to keep watching this storm right up until the last-minute. So, as of right now, plan on receiving an email from Grace on Saturday night and we'll let you know the plan.

If you are not on Grace's email list you can sign up here. Once signed up you will get all hurricane related news as well as the Grace Updates that we regularly send out.
